The Story of
Graphic Design
at TTU

Graphic Design at Takoradi Technical University developed from the Commercial Arts programmes introduced after polytechnic education gained tertiary status in 1992. In 2008, the Department of Graphic Design was formally created from the then Fine Art Department, establishing a dedicated home for Graphic Design education and practice.

A TIMELINE OF PROGRESS

From the development of Commercial Arts education to the establishment of a dedicated Graphic Design Department, new academic pathways and continued innovation, these milestones trace key stages in the department’s development.

1992 — Tertiary Status

Polytechnic education in Ghana was upgraded to tertiary status under PNDC Law (1992), leading to the introduction of HND Commercial Arts programmes at Takoradi Polytechnic.

2008 — Graphic Design Department Established

The Department of Graphic Design was created from the then Fine Art Department to offer Graphic Design courses leading to the HND in Commercial Arts, Graphic Design Option.

2023 — Innovation & Applied Design

The Department developed locally made packaging for products including rice, eggs, drinks, clothes and foodstuffs, as well as solar-powered 3D signage, with works presented at Faculty exhibitions and the 2023 TTU Innovation Fair.

2007 — New Academic Opportunities

The Polytechnic Act 2007 (Act 745) strengthened the polytechnics as public tertiary institutions with academic autonomy and created room for the introduction of new programmes and courses.

2023 — New B-Tech Top-Up Programme

The Department successfully completed the first Trimester/Modular I of its new one-year B-Tech Top-Up programme, which commenced on 13 January 2023.
